\u00bbFeminist Findings is the collective research of twenty-six womxn and non-binary people on histories of feminist publishing. The L.i.P. Collective\u2014short for \u201cLiberation in Print\u201d\u2014formed during the recent lock-down period. Across four continents and many time zones, its members came together via their computers to dig through digital archives, searching for the missing histories of feminist journals, magazines, zines, newspapers, and newsletters.\u00ab <\/span><\/em><\/p>Feminist Findings Press Kit<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Workshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zu Beginn der Corona Pandemie versp\u00fcrte ich einen uners\u00e4ttlichen Drang mich in neue Gefilde zu st\u00fcrzen. Pl\u00f6tzlich sah ich mich mit einer Menge Zeit und ziemlich wenig Zeitdruck konfrontiert. Mein Leben fand im Digitalen statt und zwar ganz gem\u00fctlich zwischen Couch, Kaffeemaschine und Schreibtisch. Beim Kochen lief nun nicht mehr eine Netflix Serie sondern ein Vortrag, eine Lesung oder eine Podiumsdiskussion. Diese Vielfalt an Themen rund um Design zeigte mir, wie divers und mit welcher kritischen Haltung unser Fach in unterschiedlichen L\u00e4ndern verhandelt wird. Instagram und Twitter wurden nun zu meinen wichtigsten Informations- und Wissensplattformen.

Genau dort folgte ich einem Aufruf des Centre National du Graphisme Le Signe<\/a> zur Teilnahme an einem sechsw\u00f6chigen Workshop zur Erforschung von feministischen Periodika, der von Common Interest<\/a> (Nina Paim und Corin Gisel) und der Journalistin Madeleine Morley<\/a> abgehalten wurde. Es formte sich ein kleines Forschungskollektiv, welches sich w\u00f6chentlich im digitalen Raum traf, austauschte und gegenseitig unterst\u00fctzte. Dabei erstellten wir beispielsweise gemeinsam eine Linksammlung<\/a> mit all den auffindbaren digitalisierten Zeitschriften, die sich im feministischen Spektrum bewegten. Es ist erstaunlich, wie viele nicht nur inhaltlich sondern auch gestalterisch fabelhafte Magazine existierten und es ist erschreckend, dass mir keines dieser Magazine jemals im Studium untergekommen sind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bbFeminist Findings presents articles and essays on the labor, loves, networks, hierarchies, friendships, fall-outs, struggles, victories, economics, designs, and daily lives of womxn in the past working out what it might mean to organize a feminist praxis. Especially from the late 1960s onwards, publishing became a crucial means for womxn to build community and inspire social change. Feminist Findings Zine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Im Verlauf meiner Recherche fokussierte ich mich auf die Berliner Frauenzeitung Courage<\/a>, die zwischen 1976 und 1984 publiziert worden ist. Dabei begeisterte mich vor allem, welche Kr\u00e4fte, M\u00f6glichkeiten und Sichtbarkeiten kollektive, kollaborative sowie aktivistische Ans\u00e4tze entfalten k\u00f6nnen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berliner Frauenzeitung Courage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u00bbDie Idee f\u00fcr die autonome links-feministische Zeitung Courage kam von einer kleinen Gruppe von unterschiedlichen Berliner Frauen. Sie waren so unterschiedlich, wie Frauen zu allen Zeiten gewesen sind. Die meisten waren junge, zum Teil erwerbslose Akademikerinnen und Studentinnen, die in der autonomen Frauenbewegung aktiv waren. Sie kannten sich aus dem Frauenzentrum in der Kreuzberger Hornstrasse und kamen alle mit ihrer eigenen Geschichte in die Bleibtreustrasse 48, wo die Courage ihren Sitz hatte. \u00bbSo ein Projekt lag einfach in der Luft\u00ab, erinnert sich Sibylle Plogstedt, gemeinsam mit Sabine Zurm\u00fchl (Mit-)Gr\u00fcnderin der Courage: \u00bbEs gibt das einpr\u00e4gsame Bild aus dem Film Madame X von Ulrike Ottinger. Da brechen alle Frauen gleichzeitig auf, jede aus einem anderen Ort und treffen sich auf einem Boot, mit dem sie in See stechen. So, als h\u00e4tte Madame X sie gerufen. So oder \u00e4hnlich kann man sich auch den Aufbruch der Courage-Frauen vorstellen.\u00ab Einig waren sie sich darin: \u00bbWir brauchen eine Zeitung, die Frauen darin unterst\u00fctzt, politische Verantwortung zu \u00fcbernehmen und sie ermutigt, Privilegien und Macht zu beanspruchen.\u00ab Das schrieben sie in einem gr\u00fcnen Faltblatt, das sie aus dem Stipendium von Ele Sch\u00f6fthaler bezahlt und \u00fcberall verteilt hatten und das in der Zwischenzeit vergilbt ist.\u00ab<\/span><\/em><\/p>Notz, Gisela o.D.: Die Frauenzeitschrift Courage, <\/em>

A Letter from the Future by Klaudia Mazur <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>

Dear Courage, <\/em><\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s been 36 years since you received, opened, and discussed your last letter to the editor. Maybe it came from someone who felt encouraged and empowered, as I do now, 36 years after you published your last issue, when an era came to an end with your disappearance. I spent a long time thinking about what\u2019s actually disappeared and what\u2019s remained, and how we\u2019re still facing similar problems and struggles. And I ultimately realized that much more remains than that which has vanished.<\/em><\/span><\/p>

Courage itself archives countless voices, projects, and the power of solidarity not only in Berlin, but also beyond the city borders through its articles, ads, classifieds, artworks, notes, and letters. It documents the courage that it takes to start a project from scratch, one united by an inner drive to give every woman a voice and space. It archives the different work processes that took place behind the scenes while making the magazine, transparently outlining how it paid for itself, and what percentage of Courage was financed by ads or loans. <\/em><\/span><\/p>

Courage became a space that temporarily created jobs, jobs where women could not only make a living, but also where they could be proud of being \u201cCourage Women.\u201d Its very pages represent the benefits of a collective way of working, but at the same time, a closer read of Courage\u2019s history reveals how deeply power structures are rooted in all of us, and how they can undermine our attempts at lived utopias. At Courage, internal power structures, unpaid work, self-exploitation, lack of transparency, and division of labor ended up causing strife. <\/em><\/span><\/p>

Courage is indeed an archive: From it, we can discover just how much we can learn today, and in the future, from the past\u2014from the processes, projects, discussions, and thoughts inscribed in its black-and-white pages. What I\u2019ve learned from you is that feminist periodicals shouldn\u2019t disappear into archives. When we work with them, we not only learn from them, but we work together across the dimensions of time and space. We\u2019re encouraged not to draw from hope, but instead to draw from the spirit of solidarity, from a tether extending from the past to the present, connecting us despite what problems we\u2019re still fighting for or what year we\u2019re in. What I learned from you is that each of us can be a \u201cCourage Woman,\u201d even if 36 years have passed. <\/em><\/span><\/p>
